Free Slug Generator

Turn any title into a clean, SEO-friendly URL slug with lowercase letters and hyphens.

A URL is a promise you keep for years

A good page address is short, readable and permanent. People see it in search results, in shared links and in the address bar, and it tells them what they will find before they click. It is also the one part of a page that you really should not change later, because every change breaks existing links. That makes the moment you create the slug the moment to get it right. This generator turns titles into clean slugs in seconds, one title per line, so you can plan a whole batch of pages at once.

What the tool does to your text

  • Converts everything to lowercase.
  • Replaces spaces with a hyphen or an underscore, whichever you choose.
  • Removes punctuation and symbols, and turns an ampersand into the word and.
  • Converts accented letters to plain ones, so a title with an accent becomes ordinary letters.
  • Optionally removes stop words such as a, the, of and and.
  • Optionally cuts the result to a maximum length.
  • Optionally keeps or drops numbers.

Structure: flat or in folders?

Many sites use folders to show where a page sits, such as /tools/pdf/merge-pdf. That can help people and search engines understand your structure, but it also makes addresses longer and harder to change when you reorganise. A flat structure, where most pages sit directly under the home page, is simpler to maintain. Pick one approach and use it throughout. If you use folders, keep them shallow, usually no more than two levels.

Writing slugs for Bengali and other non-Latin titles

If your page title is in Bengali, Arabic or another non-Latin script, this tool cannot produce a slug from it, because letters it cannot convert are dropped. The reliable approach is to write the slug by hand in Latin letters, either as a short English description of the page or as a simple transliteration. Many sites choose a short English slug even for a local-language page, because it is easier to type, share and read in a link. Whichever you choose, be consistent across the site.

Changing a slug later: do it carefully

If you must change the address of a published page, set up a permanent 301 redirect from the old address to the new one, or every link and search result pointing to the old address will lead to an error. On WordPress, changing the slug in the editor does not always redirect automatically, though some SEO plugins offer to do it. The .htaccess redirect generator writes the rule if you prefer to do it by hand. And avoid changing slugs just for small improvements. A slightly better address is rarely worth the disruption.

A batch workflow for a new site

When you plan a site with many pages, do the slugs in one sitting. Write all your page titles in a list, one per line, paste them in and generate the first draft of every slug at once. Then go through the output with a pen: shorten any that run long, fix awkward stop word removal and make sure that no two pages end up with the same slug. Put the final list in a spreadsheet beside the titles, so that anyone building the pages uses the agreed addresses. Planning addresses together also reveals gaps and overlaps in your content before anything is built.

Keywords in slugs: how much do they matter?

A clear keyword in the address helps people understand the link and can help search engines a little, but it is a small signal, far smaller than the quality of the page. Do not stuff several variants into a slug. One natural description of the page is better than a string of related phrases. If the title is already clear, the slug can simply mirror its main words.

Common slug mistakes

  • Leaving the default address with a numeric ID.
  • Including the date in an evergreen page.
  • Using capital letters, spaces or underscores.
  • Making the slug a full sentence.
  • Changing it later without a redirect.

Stop words: remove them or not?

Removing words such as a, the and of makes slugs shorter, and often that is a good thing: best-laptop-students reads fine. But sometimes it changes the meaning or makes the address awkward. what-is-seo becomes what-seo, which is worse. Use the option as a starting point and edit the result by eye, especially for titles that are questions.
