Token counts are estimates and can differ from what each AI provider counts. Enter the input price from your provider's pricing page to see a cost estimate. Your text stays in your browser and is never stored.

What is a token?

Tokens are the small pieces of text that AI models read and write. A token can be a whole short word, part of a longer word, a number or a punctuation mark. Before a model processes your prompt it splits the text into tokens, and everything it does, including how much you pay and how much text fits in one request, is measured in tokens.

How to use this token counter

Paste or type your text in the box above. The counter shows an estimated token count, plus words and characters, as you type. If you know your model’s input price per million tokens, enter it in the price field to see roughly what that text would cost to send. Your text stays in your browser the whole time.

Tokens vs words: a rule of thumb

For ordinary English, one token is roughly four characters, or about three quarters of a word, so 100 tokens is around 75 words. Code, numbers, emoji and many non-English languages usually need more tokens for the same amount of text.

Why token counts matter

Two limits depend on tokens. The first is the context window, the maximum amount of text a model can handle in one request, prompt and reply together. The second is cost: API providers bill per token, usually priced per million tokens, and output tokens typically cost more than input tokens. Knowing your count before you send a long prompt helps you stay within limits and avoid surprises on the bill.

How accurate is this estimate?

Each AI provider uses its own tokenizer, so exact counts differ between models. This tool uses a simple estimate that is usually close for English text but is not exact. For billing-critical work, check the usage figures your provider returns.
