Why real heading styles matter
The headings in the document use Word’s built-in styles, not just larger text. That is what lets you build a table of contents with a single click, see the structure in the navigation pane and let screen readers move between sections. It also means you can restyle the whole document by changing the style definitions once, instead of formatting each heading by hand. For a long report this saves a large amount of time.
After you open the file
- Add a title page or header and footer if you need them.
- Insert a table of contents from the References menu.
- Adjust fonts and colours to match your company’s template.
- Check the tables, since column widths may need adjusting.

Limits to know about
- The conversion covers the common Markdown features. Unusual extensions, such as footnotes and nested tables, may appear as plain text.
- Images in Markdown are not embedded. They appear as a short note with the image’s alt text, so add pictures in Word afterwards.

Page size, font and file name

Markdown that converts well
