Free AI Grammar Checker
The most useful part is the reason, not the fix
Any spell checker can underline a mistake. What helps you improve is knowing why something is wrong. This free AI grammar checker corrects spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalisation and clear word errors, then lists each change with the original, the fix and a short reason. It is told to leave your style, tone and meaning alone, and to skip sentences that are already correct, so your writing keeps sounding like you. If you write English as a second language, the pattern of reasons teaches you more than the corrections do.
How to use it
- Paste your text.
- Choose the spelling: Keep mine, American or British.
- Run the check.
- Read the list of changes, one by one.
- Copy the corrected text, or use it as input to check it again after your own edits.
The mistakes it catches most often
| Type | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Subject and verb agreement | The list of items are ready. | The list of items is ready. |
| Wrong word | Their going to call you. | They’re going to call you. |
| Spelling | I recieved your message. | I received your message. |
| Run-on or missing stop | Thanks for your help I appreciate it. | Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. |
| Missing article | She is engineer. | She is an engineer. |
Patterns to watch for if English is your second language
- Articles. Missing or extra a, an and the are the most common issue for speakers of languages that have no articles, such as Bengali.
- Prepositions. We say depend on, interested in and arrive at, and each language chooses differently.
- Verb tenses and agreement, especially third person singular, such as she works.
- Word order in questions. Do you know where it is, not where is it.
When the same reason appears again and again in your list, that is the habit to practise.
American or British spelling
Choose the version your audience expects and keep to it. American spelling uses color, organize and center, while British spelling uses colour, organise and centre. Some words differ in more than one way, such as license as a verb in American English against licence for the noun in British English. Keep mine leaves your choices alone, which is the right option if you are quoting or writing in a mixed setting.
What a grammar checker cannot do
- It cannot judge whether your argument is clear or your facts are right.
- It may sometimes miss an error or suggest a change you do not need, so review the list instead of accepting everything blindly.
- It keeps your style on purpose. To change tone or wording, use the AI paraphrasing tool, and to check how easy the text is to read, the readability checker.
Reading the list of changes
Under the corrected text, each change is shown as the original wording, the fix and a reason of a few words, up to thirty changes at a time. Read them rather than copying the corrected text blindly. Accept the ones that are plainly right, and think about the ones where the reason surprises you, because that is where you learn. If you disagree with a change, keep your original, and if the checker changed something that was a deliberate choice, such as a name or a quotation, put it back by hand.
Copy corrected text copies the clean version. Use as input moves the corrected text back into the box, which is useful for a second pass after you have edited it yourself.
A routine for important writing
Write the draft first and edit for meaning, run the grammar check last, then read the result aloud once. Reading aloud catches the errors that tools miss, such as a word that is spelled correctly but wrong. For job applications and formal documents, ask a friend to read it too.
Your text is sent to Google’s Gemini model, which returns the corrected text and the list of changes. This site does not save it. Each visitor has a limited number of free uses per day, and each check has a maximum length, so split long documents into parts. Avoid pasting sensitive personal information.
